Seed
[WWW]The Bay Area Seed Interchange Library (BASIL) Project In the last two decades, the majority of the world's family-owned seed companies have been bought out by multinationals such as the Monsanto and Novartis corporations. These companies are not interested in creating sustainable food systems and communities. They are busy replacing carefully bred strains of vegetables and flowers with their own hybrids and patented varieties. Hybrids don't produce viable seed, and the seed from patented varieties cannot legally be collected and used. Instead, the seeds must be bought fresh each year, forcing gardeners and farmers to purchase from corporate seed sources annually.

Drylands
[WWW]Greening The Desert They laughed at him and said it couldn't be done. Nothing could be grown in that salt laden dustbowl. But Geoff Lawton had other ideas. He travels the world teaching others how to repair trashed environments that are beyond hope of becoming productive.

[WWW]Rainfall and river networks prove accurate predictors of fish biodiversity Princeton researchers have invented a method for turning simple data about rainfall and river networks into accurate assessments of fish biodiversity, allowing better prediction of the effects of climate change and the ecological impact of man-made structures like dams.

Forests
[WWW]Can you rescue a rainforest? When the scientists planted worn-out cattle fields in Costa Rica with a sampling of local trees, native species began to move in and flourish, raising the hope that destroyed rainforests can one day be replaced.
