Calorie Restriction
Long distance hiking is characterized by the inability to get enough calories while on the trail. On the unexamined assumption that we must have huge amounts of calories to survive (three, four, five, six thousand per day?) we make the mistake of becoming dependent on fast calories derived from refined sugars and refined starches which tend to have very little in the way of nutritional value. Fast calories behave more like a stimulant drug than a unit of nutrition. What would happen if we got our calories from proteins, fats and slow carbs? We still won't get enough but at least we would be maintaining and building health rather than burning health. Also, a slow carb hiking diet might provide some of the longevity benefits found in calorie restricted diets.

Endurance Exercise
Studies on the longevity benefits of endurance exercise do not make a clear distinction between sprint type sports and (for lack of a better term) continuous motion sports. Sprint sports are characterized by a careful preparation for the event, a sudden burn of the bodies resources to do the event (usually including the use of health burning stimulants) then a recovery period for the next event. Continuous motion sports such as long distance hiking

ORAC Foods (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity)
[WWW]ORAC Food Chart A wide variety of foods had been test for their ORAC values in the past, but the following chart is more current and reflects the 2007 results. The importance of a food’s high ORAC value is that it indicates a food’s antioxidant value, and a high value is believed to be correlated in the Free-radical theory of aging.
